The NFL is an everchanging league. It has stars changing teams and young talented people entering every year. Those young players are setting out to create their legacy and the old stars are out to prove they are still viable players and can help a team win. Recently it seems as if it is out with the old and in with the new. There are a few prevailing stories that have gone with this off season in the NFL. What will happen in the draft with the quarterbacks and where will old superstars land in free agency? Only time will tell but It’s already starting to take shape with the start of free agency.
Big names already found a new home and they are somewhat unexpected. Julius Peppers has signed with the Chicago Bears and I have no idea why. They were a mediocre team last year and they don’t look that much better this year. Their franchise saving quarterback Jay Cutler killed their team and the cornerstone running back Matt Forte didn’t produce like he was supposed to do. They struggled all year and I don’t understand why an aging star would go somewhere that doesn’t have big expectations for next season. At his age he needs to find a team that could take him to a super bowl. Equally confusing Kyle Vanden Bosh one year removed from the pro bowl decided it would be a good career move to sign with the Detroit Lions. He is a big name player who is aging and needs to find a successful team.
The San Diego chargers are an interesting team because they seem to be getting rid of all of their key players. They released both of their running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Darren Sproles. LT only ran for 730 yards but he ran for twelve touchdowns which is an impressive amount of scores for any running back. Darren Sproles didn’t show his worth as a running back but rather as a special teamer. He was an outstanding kick returner and showed his speed and skill on every play he touched the ball. He scored eight touchdowns last season and with more of a commitment he could easily add five or six more to that total. They also decided to trade a former all pro corner back to a team in the AFC. The New York Jets would love to have Antonio Cromartie who in one year had ten interceptions. Shawne Merriman and Marcus McNeil are young playmakers with a lot of upside and it seems like a mistake to break up a team that has a lot of potential.
A big story surrounds the four quarterbacks that are entering the NFL draft. Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow and Jimmy Clausen are the most talked about players besides Ndamukong Suh the all star defensive tackle. Tim Tebow is the most questioned because he is a great athlete but the scouts don’t know if he can play quarter back at the next level. He has changed his throwing motion in order to get recognition as a quarter back. He is in a stage in his football career where he has to decide if quarterback is worth the struggle. NFL scouts want to turn him into a running back. Clausen has been sliding down draft boards because of the general lack of need by the early teams. Bradford has already locked up the first pick overall and will be drafted by the Rams. Colt McCoy however is an interesting case because he is generally ranked as the third best quarterback in the draft but there is no real team that has a dire need for him. He will be drafted by a team that has no confidence in their starting quarterback and are looking for a possible change.
The league constantly changes and no one is ever safe. Ben Roethlisberger is reportedly on the trade block because of his recent off field issues. He won two Super Bowls and he is going to be traded during his prime because he is a headache. His partner in crime Santonio Holmes got traded because he is also a headache. It just goes to show you that you are no safe no matter how good you are. It’s a lesson that should be taught to everyone because it shows you that no one is beyond rules. Just be careful everyone.
